Chapter Index

He dipped his finger in it and tasted it on his lips.

Sweet. Fragrant.

He lifted Xu Yan up, cupping his small, delicate face, and kissed away his tears.

“Why are you still trembling, baby?”

Wen Sinian buried his face in Xu Yan’s neck, licking away the glistening sweat, his voice gentle and soothing. “There, there. It felt too good, didn’t it?”

Xu Yan clenched his teeth, occasionally letting out a sob, unable to speak with his eyes closed.

Wen Sinian had just taken great care of him, and now he held him, comforting him for a long time until the trembling finally stopped. Only then did he wrap Xu Yan in the blanket before getting out of bed, bare-chested.

He went to the bathroom to rinse his mouth and returned with a wet towel.

His movements were light, careful not to wake his sleeping “wife.”

Back in the small study, he saw that the person on the bed had curled up again.

Wen Sinian brought the little heater over to warm him, then lifted a corner of the blanket.

The dim yellow light illuminated a small area. The person hiding underneath was lying on his side, his soft cheeks pressed against the sheet, his eyes and the tip of his nose red, his lips slightly swollen. His entire body was fair and luminous, glistening with a thin layer of sweat.

His legs were curled together, even more glistening.

Suddenly exposed from his safe little nest, he shrank back slightly, as if afraid of being treated so harshly again.

Wen Sinian ground his molars, suppressing his frustration, and simply reached out to gently wipe him down with the warm towel.

He spread the blanket from the foldable bed underneath, then got back into bed, pulling Xu Yan into his arms and placing a gentle kiss on the top of his head.

“Goodnight, baby.”

Xu Yan was utterly exhausted, his heavy eyelids blinking a few times before he fell asleep. Just before he drifted off, he saw the sky outside the window beginning to brighten.

Xu Yan slept until late morning.

When he woke, he found himself dressed in clean sleepwear, the buttons fastened all the way to the top, as if trying to conceal something.

The sheets and blanket had been changed, and the foldable bed was put away in the corner.

He got out of bed, his body still aching slightly.

Stepping outside, he saw that the sheets and blanket had already been washed and hung out to dry in the small courtyard, fluttering in the wind, painfully obvious.

He saw Wen Sinian returning, carrying several bags, and rushed over to question him, “Did you wash the sheets?”

Wen Sinian handed him a freshly bought little cake, ruffling his soft hair, his voice low: “You were all sweaty last night.”

Xu Yan was flustered: “But you didn’t have to wash them today! Everyone will see!”

“It’s fine,” Wen Sinian reassured him. “Just say you spilled something on them.”

Xu Yan huffed, clutching the little cake as he walked inside, muttering under his breath, “It was you who made them like that…”

Soon after, Shen Nanli and Shang Jia arrived with arms full of gifts, cheerfully paying their New Year’s visit to Grandma.

When they saw the sheets and blanket hanging in the courtyard, they were surprised. “Xu Yan, how diligent of you to do laundry on New Year’s Day!”

Xu Yan mumbled, “…Mhm.”

Then Zhuang Sheng arrived to pay his respects and asked the same question: “Are those sheets hanging in the yard? Why wash them today?”

Xu Yan grumbled, “Mhm.”

Even Grandma found it curious: “Goodness, did you really get up early to wash them?”

Xu Yan answered without thinking: “Mhm, mhm, mhm.”

Wen Sinian stood beside him, laughing. Xu Yan had never seen him smile so happily, his brows relaxed, the corners of his eyes crinkling slightly, his lips curved upward, the usual coldness in his expression melted away by warmth.

Xu Yan stared for a moment, then frowned.

This scoundrel!

He walked over and “accidentally” kicked Wen Sinian hard on the shin, nearly tripping himself in the process. Instead, Wen Sinian steadied him.

“Don’t fall.”

Xu Yan grew even angrier, stomping his slippers loudly as he turned and marched back to the study with the little cake.

Shang Jia and Wen Sinian had agreed not to stay at Xu Yan’s place again, so they moved all their things to Shen Nanli’s.

Wen Sinian tidied up the room and swapped places with Xu Yan, taking the smaller study for himself and letting Xu Yan sleep in the bigger bed.

For the next two days, Xu Yan didn’t even allow Wen Sinian near his room, but every morning, he would wake up curled in Wen Sinian’s arms, warmed from head to toe. His legs and feet were no longer cold, so he tacitly allowed Wen Sinian to sneak into his bed every night while he slept.

There was just one rule: Wen Sinian was only allowed to kiss him above the neck, no touching below.

Fortunately, Wen Sinian stuck to it until the fourth day of the New Year.

Zhuang Sheng said he and his boyfriend were taking their family to nearby Yang Town for a couple of days and asked if Xu Yan wanted to join. It would be a good chance for Grandma to get some sun and fresh air, so Xu Yan agreed. Shen Nanli and Shang Jia decided to come along too.

Yang Town was close to Wu Town, just a two-hour drive away.

During the holiday, everywhere was crowded. Since they left on short notice, they booked a chain hotel near the attractions.

In the afternoon, they visited a garden. The wheelchair came in handy as Wen Sinian pushed Grandma along while Xu Yan chattered beside them, reading aloud from the tour guidebook.

Grandma rarely got out, so everything seemed fresh and exciting to her. She was full of energy and happily joined them until evening.

For dinner, they enjoyed local Yang Town cuisine. Since they were out to have fun, everyone had a little of the town’s special fruit wine—sweet, tangy, and light on alcohol.

Xu Yan had some too. It was sweet and fruity, easy to drink.

That night, Shang Jia and Grandma shared a room. Before leaving, Shang Jia reassured Xu Yan multiple times that she would take good care of Grandma, then left with the old lady, laughing and chatting.

Xu Yan was supposed to share a standard room with Shen Nanli, while Wen Sinian took the room with the big bed. But by the time Xu Yan returned from the bathroom, the room assignments had been switched.

Wen Sinian stood by the window, on the phone. Xu Yan tiptoed back to his bed and sat down, intending to message Shen Nanli and ask why he had betrayed him. But his head felt a little dizzy, so he leaned back to rest for a moment.

He noticed an extra layer of soft, smooth, waterproof sheet on the bed, very comfortable.

Just as he was wondering about it, Wen Sinian finished his call and returned.

Seeing Xu Yan fully dressed but with flushed cheeks and slightly unfocused eyes, Wen Sinian walked over and picked him up: “Let’s take a shower first, then sleep.”

Xu Yan was on guard: “Why are you in here?”

Wen Sinian, already carrying him toward the bathroom, replied, “You drank. It’s easier to take care of you this way.”

Xu Yan realized Wen Sinian was undressing him and protested, “I don’t need taking care of. I only had a little. I’m not drunk. I can manage myself.”

Wen Sinian let go, watching as Xu Yan unbuttoned his own shirt and tossed it onto the bed. Then Wen Sinian crouched in front of him, removing his shoes and socks.

Xu Yan’s hand rested on his waistband as he remembered something: “But I didn’t bring a change of clothes.”

Wen Sinian pointed to a paper bag on the table: “I brought some for you.”

Xu Yan relaxed a little and shooed him away: “Alright, I’m going to shower. You can leave now.”

Wen Sinian watched him, detecting a slight slur in his voice and the way he swayed as he stood. He was tipsy.

As Xu Yan tried to push him out of the bathroom and close the door, a large, veined hand gently held the door open.

Xu Yan tilted his head, peeking through the crack, and Wen Sinian said, “Don’t lock the door.”

Xu Yan’s wide eyes stared at him: “No way.”

Wen Sinian pushed the door open a little wider: “Your tolerance is low. What if you get dizzy and fall, or something happens? I need to be able to get to you right away. Or… should I help you shower now?”

Xu Yan did feel a little lightheaded, but he wasn’t that drunk. He was perfectly sober.

No way was he falling for Wen Sinian’s tricks.

The hand holding the door back withdrew, and Xu Yan immediately locked the bathroom door, starting his shower.

As the warm water enveloped him, washing away his exhaustion, Xu Yan finished applying shower gel. Before the bubbles could rinse off, he noticed two long antennae emerging from the pile of white foam at his feet. Curious, he was about to look closer when the water washed away the bubbles, revealing a fat, long-antenned bug crawling quickly toward his foot.

A chill ran through his entire body. Xu Yan let out a scream:

“Aah—!”

His face turned pale with terror, and he frantically pulled at the door, barefoot. Unfortunately, he had locked it himself. His hands shook as he fumbled with the lock, finally escaping what felt like hell.

A large figure stood right outside the door. Without a second thought, Xu Yan threw himself into those arms, clinging desperately.

His body, still covered in slippery bubbles, was soft and smooth, almost unbearably tempting. The cheap shower gel smelled sickly sweet on him, like a ripe, trembling peach hanging from a branch, begging to be bitten into.

Xu Yan buried himself in the broad, safe chest, trembling with fear. His long legs wrapped tightly around the strong waist, as if rooted there. He squirmed, trying to climb even higher for security.

Wen Sinian held him steady. His shirt was already damp from the steam rising off Xu Yan’s body. One large hand firmly supported him, the soft flesh slipping slightly between his fingers before he gripped tighter. His other hand rubbed Xu Yan’s back.

Feeling the wet heat and the way Xu Yan pressed against him without an inch of space between them, Wen Sinian’s temple throbbed. He took a deep breath, struggling to contain the heat rising within him.

“What happened?”

Xu Yan, sensing the huskiness in his voice, remembered the scene and still felt disgusted and terrified. He rubbed his wet hair against Wen Sinian’s chin, whimpering, “There was a bug in there, a huge one! It was so scary, almost crawled onto my foot. I was so scared, I hate bugs the most… wuu…”

Wen Sinian lifted him slightly and carried him back into the shower. Turning on the hot water, he whispered in Xu Yan’s ear, “Let me help you wash it off, okay?” Then, in the swirling steam, he swiftly dealt with the bug, flushing it down the toilet.

“There, it’s gone. Nothing to be afraid of now.”

Wen Sinian held him under the showerhead, the hot water cascading over them both.
