Read And Be Lazy
    Chapter Index

Later, Xu Yan actually did show Wen Sinian his skills. They’d bought the ingredients together at the supermarket, and then prepared them side by side in the kitchen.

It was the first time Xu Yan had cooked with someone else. Standing with his hands on his hips, he ordered Wen Sinian around like a head chef.

One moment, he complained that the tomato pieces were too big. Another, that the eggplant hadn’t been peeled properly. Then, that the ribs hadn’t been blanched long enough. Wen Sinian, patient as ever, redid each step.

By the time they finally sat down to eat, two hours had passed.

Still, looking at the spread on the table , braised spare ribs, scrambled eggs with tomato, seasoned eggplant, and a winter melon pork rib soup , Xu Yan applauded him.

“For your first time, this is already pretty good,” he praised. “Though of course, most of the credit goes to your head chef here, otherwise you probably wouldn’t have finished before dark.”

Wen Sinian placed a rib in his bowl and flattered him. “Thank you for your guidance, Chef. Please taste the dish.”

Xu Yan tried it, eyes lighting up. “It’s delicious. I think you have a talent for cooking.”

“That’s because I had a good teacher,” Wen Sinian said, wiping oil from the corner of his lips.

Xu Yan soaked up the flattery, sitting up straighter. “Glad you know it. I may only know how to cook simple home dishes, but that’s plenty for daily life. Stick with me, and one day you’ll be just as good as your teacher.”

“Mm. Teacher’s amazing,” Wen Sinian said with a smile.

Before eating, Xu Yan had ladled out some soup to take to his grandmother at the hospital.

In recent visits, Wen Sinian had always accompanied him. His grandmother seemed to have grown used to seeing them together.

Handing her the soup, Xu Yan said, “I put in a little less salt today, the doctor said you can’t have anything too salty.”

She took a sip, then asked, “Sweetheart, did you make this? It tastes a bit different from before.”

Xu Yan glanced at Wen Sinian. “Yes, I made it.”

His grandmother didn’t ask further and drank it all.

That night, Xu Yan stayed at the hospital with her instead of going home.

Lying beside the bed, he held her hand and chatted , even about Wen Sinian.

“Sweetheart, he’s been with you every time lately. I haven’t known him long, but I can tell , he’s a good boy.”

Xu Yan rubbed his head against her hand and nodded. “Mm-hm.”

“You two… have a good relationship?” she asked carefully.

Xu Yan didn’t dare say it outright, but he nodded firmly again.

“Good, good,” she said, seeming relieved. “With him by your side, I can rest easier.”

After talking a while longer, she fell asleep. Xu Yan stayed by the bed, watching her complexion look better and better these days, and eventually closed his eyes to sleep there.

Wen Sinian had started driving home but turned back halfway. He sat in his car outside the hospital for a while, not going in right away.

It wasn’t until around midnight, when the hallway lights went out, that he got out and took the elevator up.

The motion sensors lit the corridor one lamp at a time as he walked, then darkened behind him. Finally, he stopped in front of a ward.

Inside, the small bedside lamp was still on. Through the window, he could see a fluffy head of hair resting on the bed.

He frowned slightly, then quietly opened the door.

Both grandmother and grandson were sleeping soundly. Wen Sinian stepped closer, noticing their still-clasped hands. His brow eased, but he still bent down to scoop the younger man into his arms.

If he slept like that all night, he’d wake sore all over.

He set Xu Yan down gently on the wide sofa. Half-awake, Xu Yan saw Wen Sinian holding him and, in his grogginess, thought they were at home. “Don’t mess with me…” he mumbled.

Wen Sinian covered his mouth with a soft “shh.”

Blinking himself awake, Xu Yan realized they were at the hospital. He glanced at the bed , luckily, his grandmother hadn’t been disturbed.

Pulling Wen Sinian down, he whispered in his ear, “Why did you come back?”

“Worried about you,” Wen Sinian murmured, kissing his cheek. He pulled a blanket over him.

Xu Yan curled up under it, only his drowsy face peeking out.

Wen Sinian bent again to press a lingering kiss to his lips, only pulling back when Xu Yan was breathless.

    Straightening, he said, “Alright, sleep.”

Xu Yan thought he was leaving, and suddenly felt reluctant. From under the blanket, he reached out to hook a finger around Wen Sinian’s. “You’re not leaving, are you?”

Kneeling down, Wen Sinian intertwined their fingers. “I’ll go to the studio in the morning, then come pick you up at noon, okay?”

“I can go home by myself,” Xu Yan replied.

Wen Sinian reached out and ruffled his hair. “Be good, wait for me to come pick you up.”

Xu Yan obediently nodded, then said softly, “Can you wait a bit before you leave?”

Wen Sinian didn’t respond, so Xu Yan added, “I want you to keep me company for a while longer…”

The man squatting beside him stood up. Before Xu Yan could react, the blanket over him was lifted, and the next moment, he fell into a warm embrace.

The sofa was spacious enough for Xu Yan alone, but with another person, it felt a little crowded.

Wen Sinian lay on the outer side, holding him close. “I’ll leave after you fall asleep.”

With his head buried against Wen Sinian’s neck, the corners of Xu Yan’s lips curved up. Happily, he nodded, and then drifted off peacefully in his arms , just like the countless times he had fallen asleep being held in bed.

The next morning when Xu Yan woke up, Wen Sinian’s figure was nowhere to be seen.

He didn’t know when Wen Sinian had left the night before, and hadn’t felt it at all.

Xu Yan behaved and waited at the hospital for Wen Sinian to pick him up. It was a good chance to spend more time with his grandmother anyway. But although Wen Sinian had said he’d come at noon, he ended up being busy until evening.

When he finally came to take Xu Yan home, he apologized for being late. Xu Yan, however, comforted him instead, saying it didn’t matter , he’d enjoyed spending the day with his grandmother.

Wen Sinian didn’t say anything more then, but once they were back, he signed Xu Yan up for driving lessons. Two days later, he directly brought home a brand-new car for him.

Xu Yan didn’t know much about luxury cars. He only thought the little wing-shaped emblem looked cute. The body was a deep color, the lines sleek, the style understated yet luxurious. Inside, the linen trim paired with crimson accents was also beautiful.

Holding the car key, he still couldn’t believe it. “Is this… for me?”

“Mm,” Wen Sinian told him. “Get in the driver’s seat and try it.”

Sitting inside, Xu Yan felt weightless, like he was dreaming.

“You’re really giving it to me?”

“From now on, you can drive out anytime you want , as long as I know about it.”

“So this is really my car?”

Wen Sinian looked at the joy and excitement on his face, knowing every ripple in his heart was because of him. A deep satisfaction came over him, the feeling of complete control.

He asked in return, “Can you finish your license before school starts?”

Xu Yan was a little worried. “What if I can’t pass in time?”

Leaning on the car door, Wen Sinian looked down at him. “Then you won’t be allowed to drive it.”

That made Xu Yan panic, how could that be? He thought this car looked even better and was more comfortable than Wen Sinian’s own.

For the sake of his pretty new car, Xu Yan gritted his teeth and said seriously, “I can do it!”

Wen Sinian leaned down, kissed his soft cheek, and smiled. “Good. Your husband believes you.”

Since he’d said he’d learn to drive, Xu Yan really did study hard for the first theory test. He was always on his phone doing practice questions, while eating, walking, or lying in bed.

Wen Sinian would sometimes toss his phone aside and tease him deliberately. “Distracted?”

Soon enough, Xu Yan really couldn’t stay focused, ending up in the bath with tears in his eyes from being “tormented.”

Luckily, he passed the first test with a perfect score. He planned to brag about it to Wen Sinian when he got home.

Hearing the doorbell, he rushed over to open the door.

    “I got a perfect score.”

Before he could finish, he froze.

It wasn’t Wen Sinian at the door, but a man who was equally handsome, with a more refined, scholarly air.

Xu Yan had never met him, but instantly recognized him, this had to be Wen Sinian’s father, because their features were so similar.

Wen Zhenying also looked momentarily surprised. He stepped back, glanced at the villa’s doorplate, and confirmed he hadn’t gone to the wrong place.

    “Who are you?” he asked.

Feeling uneasy, Xu Yan clasped his hands in front of him and fiddled with his fingers. “I… I’m Xu Yan.”

Stepping inside , it was his first time visiting this villa , Wen Zhenying said, “I’m Wen Sinian’s father. He’s not home?”

“He went to the studio. He hasn’t come back yet.”

Wen Zhenying looked him over again. “What’s your relationship with him?”

Xu Yan only vaguely knew that Wen Sinian and his father weren’t close, but not exactly how strained things were. At that moment, he didn’t know how to answer, and hesitated. “We…”

Frowning, Wen Zhenying finally gave him a proper once-over.

He was wearing home clothes and slippers , clearly someone living here. But he definitely wasn’t a servant: he was young, with a fresh, handsome face, and an air of tender youthfulness.

Wen Zhenying had seen countless people in his life. One glance was enough for him to judge: this boy was likely a “kept canary” his son was raising here.

Raised so delicately, he must be treasured.

“Is he keeping you?” Wen Zhenying asked.
