Read And Be Lazy
    Chapter Index

[Year]: But you have to let me know what you’re doing.

There was also a missed voice call.

Xu Yan didn’t know if this was normal in relationships, but Year was extremely possessive. He wanted to know every little detail of Xu Yan’s day—sometimes it left him scrambling for excuses.

[Yanyan]: I’m with my two best friends.

    [Yanyan]: No one else.

    [Year]: Okay.

[Year]: Next time, tell me on your own, okay?

[Year]: Not seeing you makes me anxious.

Xu Yan’s eyelashes fluttered at that last message.

    [Yanyan]: Okay.

    [Yanyan]: What are you doing?

A photo of a desk came in—two monitors, lots of confusing-looking code.

    [Year]: Working. Thinking about you.

His breath hitched for two seconds. His heart thumped erratically.

He looked away, not wanting to reply anymore—when suddenly, he got a transfer notification.

    [Year] has sent you ¥20,000.

[Year]: Eat more. You’re so skinny it makes my heart ache.

Shang Jia asked, “Was it him again? What did he say?”

Xu Yan looked up. “He sent me money…”

    Shen Nanli: “How much?”

    Xu Yan: “Twenty thousand.”

Shen Nanli sighed, “Makes me want to fight rich people for a living.”

Shang Jia warned, “Yanyan, don’t accept it. WeChat transfers aren’t safe. Worst-case scenario—if you two fall out and he sues you, you’ll have to pay it all back.”

Xu Yan had considered that too. “I know. I’ve never accepted any of his money.”

Shang Jia relaxed a bit. “Good. Even real couples can break up ugly, so better to stay cautious.”

Xu Yan clicked the refund button and sent a message.

    [Yanyan]: I’ve got money.

[Yanyan]: I’ll eat lots and stay full ^_^

Luckily, Year didn’t insist—he just replied:

    [Year]: Okay.

Xu Yan said, “I didn’t take the money. He didn’t press the issue either.”

Shang Jia rubbed her chin. “I don’t think he’s the type to let that slide. Yanyan, check your streaming app’s backend.”

Xu Yan obediently logged in. “Check what?”

    “The wallet.”

He tapped into the wallet balance and let out a soft gasp.

    Shen Nanli: “What? What happened?”

    Shang Jia: “Is it more?”

Xu Yan looked up. “There’s thirty thousand more.”

Shen Nanli: “…One day I’m really gonna fight this guy.”

Shang Jia nodded thoughtfully. “Told you. He’s not someone you can brush off that easily. You didn’t take his WeChat money, so he used the platform’s tipping system instead—he’d rather pay double in fees just to make sure you accept it. If he wants to give you something, you’re gonna end up accepting it one way or another.”

Xu Yan looked at the stream of tip notifications, silently feeling bad for all the transaction fees Year was eating on his behalf.

He clicked into his fan leaderboard. As expected, Year was in first place, far ahead of everyone else—completely unshakable.

Of the ¥30,000, ¥20,000 came from Year’s tips, but the other ¥10,000 surprisingly came from the second-place user—a completely unknown account named “X.”

Xu Yan tapped into X’s profile, but it was completely blank. It looked like a freshly registered dummy account.

He found it a little suspicious… but with a faceless account like this, there was no way to investigate.
The movie was about to start, so Xu Yan didn’t think much of it and followed Shang Jia and Shen Nanli to check their tickets and head into the cinema.
He didn’t check his phone during the movie, and by the time it ended two and a half hours later, he had a few unread messages on WeChat.
Shang Jia and Shen Nanli checked their own phones and immediately started teasing and making noise beside him.
Shang Jia: “Dating really does change everything, huh? Wherever you go, someone’s thinking about you. Not like us—if we slept under a bridge tonight, no one would even notice.”
Shen Nanli: “Why am I not rich enough to be Yanyan’s top fan?! I’m bitter!!”
The two of them walked ahead with their arms slung over each other’s shoulders while Xu Yan followed behind, helplessly smiling and holding his phone.
An hour ago, Year had sent him a photo.
    [Year]: This would suit you.
[Year]: Baby, can I buy it for you?
Xu Yan opened the image and immediately blushed red from his ears down to his neck.
It was a snow-white lace mini dress—or more like a strappy top. The sheer material barely covered anything below the chest. If someone wore it in real life, the fluffy skirt in the back would definitely be puffed up by their round, perky—
There were two thin shoulder ties, a fluffy bunny ear headband, lace garters on both thighs connected to hollow mesh stockings… And the most critical detail: the skirt had a hole cut out at the back, revealing a soft, snow-white bunny tail. It looked like it would bounce as the wearer moved.
The outfit felt vaguely familiar—Xu Yan had worn something similar once at a café event, but that one was much longer and more modest.
This one? He couldn’t imagine wearing it outside.
While walking, he lowered his head and typed a reply:
    [Yanyan]: No
    [Yanyan]: Don’t buy it
It was way too revealing. No way was he going to wear that.
[Year]: I already bought it. What now?
    [Yanyan]: I don’t like it.
[Year]: It was ¥5800. Can’t return it.
Xu Yan froze in his tracks and stared blankly at that number on the screen.
    How… how much?!
¥5800?! For that little fabric?! How could it be so expensive?!
[Yanyan]: You’re not allowed to send it to me!
Worried that wasn’t enough, he quickly followed up:
[Yanyan]: Or I won’t talk to you ever again!
Luckily, his go-to tactic of threatening Year with sulky “I won’t talk to you” lines always seemed to work.
    [Year]: Okay.
[Year]: I’ll keep it for you for now.
[Year]: Heading back to campus now?
Shang Jia and Shen Nanli waited for him, each grabbing one of his arms to walk together toward the bus stop outside the mall.
    [Yanyan]: Yup yup.
The bus departed. It would take about half an hour to reach the front gate of Beishi University.
    [Year]: That’s perfect timing.
[Year]: Grab the delivery I sent at the gate before heading back to your dorm.
    [Yanyan]: What is it?
    [Year]: Something you love.
Xu Yan couldn’t guess what it might be. How would Year know what he liked? He didn’t remember ever being asked.
When the bus arrived, Xu Yan told the others he was going to pick up a delivery before heading back.
Shang Jia asked, “What kind of delivery? You hungry again?”
Xu Yan shook his head. “It’s from him.”
Shen Nanli clicked his tongue. “Tsk.”
Just as Xu Yan was about to go to the delivery locker, Shang Jia grabbed his arm. “Wait—what if it’s a trap? What if Top Donor Guy is waiting at the gate to catch you?!”
Xu Yan hadn’t considered that. He shivered and quickly scanned his surroundings.
    “N-No way… right?”
Shang Jia assured, “Even if it is, there are cameras near the lockers.”
Shen Nanli added, “Those cameras have been broken for days. Don’t worry, I’ll get someone else to pick it up.”
She headed to the security office and asked the guard on duty. Without hesitation, he returned with three beautifully packaged pink bags.
The three of them repeatedly thanked him and handed over a bottle of water, then scampered off with the goods like thieves.
Once they reached the boys’ dorm, Xu Yan finally took the delivery out of his bag.
They were three ice cream cakes, packed with cooling gel and still cold.
He looked at the delicate pink packaging and the intricate desserts inside. He had tried one of these cakes not long ago, loved it instantly, but thought he’d never eat it again since they were pricey and only available at one store in the whole city.
Now, there were three—just right to share with Shang Jia and Shen Nanli.
Back in his dorm, he unwrapped his portion and took a bite. The rich, velvety taste was just as amazing as last time.
He opened his alternate WeChat account and sent a photo.
[Yanyan]: Soooo delicious [starry eyes emoji]
    [Yanyan]: Thank you!!
    [Year]: You like it?
    [Yanyan]: I like it!!
[Year]: I like you too, baby.
Realizing he got baited into a switcheroo, Xu Yan pouted while chewing on a mouthful of cream and sent back a sticker:
    [Yanyan]: [angry cat punching emoji]
After finishing the cake, Zhao Qingji returned from studying at the library.

Xu Yan started getting back to business. He and Zhao Qingji discussed how to edit the final shots of the promotional video.

Once they reached an agreement, Xu Yan got to work quickly. In less than two days, he finished editing the video. After having Zhao Qingji and Shen Nanli review it twice, he sent it directly to the curator.

The curator was easy to work with and hardly requested any changes. He said the boss was very satisfied with the video, and even increased the final payment beyond what was originally agreed—giving them a total of 6,000 yuan.

Xu Yan was overjoyed. After splitting the amount with Zhao Qingji and Shen Nanli according to their shares, he didn’t forget to send a red envelope to Zhou Zhengyi as well.

The amount wasn’t large, but it was mainly to thank him for his help that day.

    Zhou Zhengyi replied immediately:

[Zhou Zhengyi]: I’m not taking the money. If I do, what does that make me? Like I’m extorting you for your hard work.

[Xu Yan]: You helped me a lot too. You should take it. If you don’t, I’ll feel guilty and won’t dare be friends with you anymore.

[Zhou Zhengyi]: How about this—still can’t take your money, but treat me to a meal? Call it my reward.
