Xu Yan was startled, his knees suddenly going weak. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
His head was in chaos, two figures overlapping in his mind, entangled and lingering, leaving him confused.
Year had found out he lied.
He really seemed angry this time…
He even threatened that if he caught him, he’d eat him up.
That line sounded familiar, like he’d heard it somewhere before.
But Xu Yan couldn’t think clearly right now. All he knew was: Year hadn’t shown up.
The one walking toward him was Wen Sinian.
Xu Yan dumbly lifted his face, his gaze passed right through Zhuang Sheng, fixed directly on Wen Sinian with visible confusion on his face.
Why was he here?
Hadn’t they agreed already?
Why was he still waiting downstairs?
How long had he been standing there?
Had he been there since Xu Yan started chatting with Zhuang Sheng?
Wen Sinian had already walked over from his car and was now right beside them. He was tall, and the streetlamp behind him cast a large, looming shadow that easily engulfed Xu Yan’s whole figure.
With a slight lift of his cold, narrow eyes, Wen Sinian finally looked away from Xu Yan and cast a glance at Zhuang Sheng beside him.
Xu Yan’s breathing became unsteady. That invisible hand gripping his throat didn’t loosen, in fact, it felt even tighter.
It was like he was being dragged into Wen Sinian’s shadow, submerged, suffocated, unable to escape.
But this wasn’t Year’s presence.
It was Wen Sinian who made him feel this way.
Even though Zhuang Sheng didn’t know who this man was, just from his appearance and aura, he could tell, this man was no ordinary person.
The luxury car parked earlier under the tree wasn’t something just anyone could afford, especially a student. Not to mention… there was something about him, some inexplicable sense of hostility and contempt that Zhuang Sheng could feel even before anyone said a word.
Wen Sinian pulled his gaze back and looked at that delicate, pale little face again. His eyes skimmed over it slowly, then he finally spoke in a languid tone.
“Why are you back so late?”
Xu Yan’s mind sluggishly turned. His pink tongue swept lightly over his dry lips, leaving behind a thin layer of glisten.
“I-I… just finished eating.”
He didn’t know why he felt so guilty. But somehow, he did feel like he had wronged Wen Sinian, maybe because Wen Sinian had waited downstairs for him for so long.
“Right, senior. Here, ”
Xu Yan took out a small, delicate box from his bag and extended it toward Wen Sinian.
“It’s repaired now. See if it works?”
Wen Sinian looked at the black gift box in his palm and smiled faintly, but didn’t take it.
“Just keep it with you.”
Xu Yan blinked. “Huh?”
Wen Sinian stood lazily, very close to him. He leaned in slightly and whispered near his ear:
“I’m trying to quit smoking. Help me keep it safe.”
Warm breath brushed his ear, and Xu Yan instinctively shrank his neck. That small exposed patch of skin felt like someone had blown on it on purpose.
Startled, he covered his neck and turned to glare at Wen Sinian, only to find that Wen Sinian had already straightened up, face calm as ever, though the depths of his dark eyes seemed bottomless.
Quit smoking?
Then why leave the lighter with him?
What if he lost it again or damaged it?
Even though the repair only cost two hundred in the end. The clerk said there was a promotion going on, that might not always be the case…
And if he wasn’t planning to take it back, then why was he waiting for him tonight?
Xu Yan couldn’t make sense of it. Still, he offered the box again, a little anxious:
“I’m afraid I won’t take good care of it. Maybe I could leave it with Senior Lin instead?”
Wen Sinian replied flatly:
“I don’t trust him.”
Xu Yan tried again:
“Then what about Senior Chen Xun?”
Wen Sinian: “No.”
“What about the seniors at your studio?”
Wen Sinian didn’t answer this time. He seemed to frown slightly, his eyes lowered. Under the dim streetlight, his long lashes cast small shadows and for a moment, he looked almost hurt.
“So… you don’t want to help me?”
Xu Yan’s heart trembled. He shook his head quickly.
“No, I didn’t mean it like that…”
While the two of them exchanged a conversation that made no sense to others, Zhuang Sheng stood to the side and observed. Their interaction was familiar and casual, Wen Sinian even used intimate language and stood close.
And Xu Yan didn’t resist at all.
Just what kind of relationship did they have?
Zhuang Sheng forced a polite smile and stepped in to interrupt their private conversation.
“Yan Yan…”
As soon as he spoke the nickname, a sharp, blade-like gaze swept toward him.
Zhuang Sheng felt a chill blow over him. Goosebumps rose along his skin, but he continued:
“Is this your classmate? Why don’t you introduce us?”
Xu Yan was just about to explain, when someone cut in.
“His roommate,” Wen Sinian said mildly.
Zhuang Sheng’s smile faltered slightly.
Roommate?
The way he acted, it looked more like a boyfriend.
“So you two are from the same dorm,” Zhuang Sheng said. “Then I’ll have to trouble you all to take care of Yan Yan from now on. He started school early, so he’s probably younger than you all, but he’s always been very well-behaved. I think you’ll get along well.”
Wen Sinian smiled. “We get along very well.”
Zhuang Sheng added, “Yan Yan’s just too kind and too naive. With a personality like his, he’s actually very easy to be taken advantage of.”
Wen Sinian asked, “You know him that well?”
Zhuang Sheng replied as if it were only natural, “I practically watched him grow up. Of course I know him better than most people.”
Wen Sinian said nothing, but his gaze seemed to darken.
Standing to the side listening to their back-and-forth, Xu Yan felt the atmosphere was extremely strange, but couldn’t say exactly what was off.
“Zhuang Sheng-Ge, it’s getting late. The dorm lights will be out soon, and you still have to drive back. Should I walk you out?” Xu Yan asked.
Zhuang Sheng didn’t look at Wen Sinian again. “No need. I’ll just take the way I came. You go on up, I won’t keep you from resting.”
Xu Yan nodded obediently. “Okay. Drive safe.”
Zhuang Sheng smiled at him, then suddenly took half a step closer, reached out, and plucked a small leaf from Xu Yan’s hair. “I’ll come find you for a meal next time.”
With that, Zhuang Sheng turned and walked down the steps of the dorm.
Xu Yan let out a light sigh of relief. He thought Wen Sinian would also leave, but when he turned around, his head almost bumped straight into a broad chest.
He hadn’t realized when Wen Sinian had gotten so close. The thin layers of clothing between them barely kept them apart. Xu Yan belatedly felt the intense heat radiating between them and instinctively tried to back away.
But a hand gently supported his back, not allowing him to escape, and even pushed him closer, holding him firmly in place.
Looking up, he met a pair of eyes gleaming faintly with moisture.
He looked like a frightened little white rabbit, legs weak, trembling in the man’s arms.
So pitiful.
“Se… senior…” Xu Yan’s voice was so soft it wavered. “Can you let go…”
Wen Sinian leaned closer, still pressing his hand to Xu Yan’s thin back. “Can you stand on your own?”
Xu Yan nodded. “Y-Yes…”
Wen Sinian slowly let go, fingers together, and lightly brushed down the center line of Xu Yan’s back, tracing along his slim spine with a smooth, deliberate motion.
It only lasted two seconds. A seemingly accidental brush while letting go.
But Xu Yan suddenly clenched his teeth, his back twitching uncontrollably, so sensitive it felt like he had already been stroked over and over.
He stepped out of that suffocating embrace, took two steps back, and once he regained his breath, tried to hand the box in his hand back again.
It was a hot potato, he really didn’t understand why Wen Sinian had asked him to hold onto it.
“Senior, this…” Xu Yan said.
Wen Sinian looked at his pale palm and said with a hint of a smile in his voice, “You’re really nice to me.”
Xu Yan didn’t understand and looked up, a little dazed.
Wen Sinian reached out and gently pinched the strands of hair Zhuang Sheng had touched earlier, rubbing them with his fingers, as if trying to wipe something off.
“You were thinking of me even while dating someone else? Trying to get it over with and return it quickly?”
