Read And Be Lazy
    Chapter Index

The Fine Arts building was near the boys’ dormitory. Parked downstairs was a black Aston Martin DBS.

The jet-black car body shimmered beneath the dim streetlamp, its sleek, sculpted lines like a panther poised to pounce—cold, luxurious, and wildly powerful.

    It turned heads easily.

Lin Xingxian walked out carrying his art supplies. He paused for two seconds when he saw the car at the entrance, then opened the door and got in. “Didn’t expect you to drive something this flashy today. Was this the car you used to bring that junior back last night?”

The man in the driver’s seat responded lazily, but didn’t start the engine. His gaze remained fixed beyond the windshield—on a slender figure in the distance.

He seemed quite focused, as if he’d been watching for a long time.

Lin Xingxian glanced at the person walking with a backpack toward the dorm building and instantly understood.

“Tsk. Your little roommate’s on a date with another handsome guy.”

The mood inside the car instantly soured. Lin acted like he didn’t notice. “He’s pretty popular, huh?”

It was late, and the streets were full of couples. The two walking together did look quite good side by side.

Lin added fuel to the fire: “He looks so shy, but he’s apparently close with everyone. Li Huaiche being your roommate is one thing, but this guy’s from the Sports Department—I know him. Those guys are all playboys. That junior of yours is so obedient. Hope he doesn’t get played.”

As the two figures finally disappeared into the dorm building, Wen Sinian started the car engine at last.

    “Not sure who’s playing who.”

    ***

Xu Yan was just about to reply when the power suddenly went out in the dorm. Everything went dark, so he grabbed his phone and power bank, then carefully climbed into bed.

    [Yanyan]: I don’t have any other geges~

    The reply came quickly.

[year]: Save that line for someone else.

[Yanyan]: I’m not lying to you.

Xu Yan exited the chat, took a screenshot, and sent it over.

    [Yanyan]: It’s true. Look~

His WeChat really only had that one chat window—completely empty otherwise. Xu Yan then explained why he hadn’t replied right away.

[Yanyan]: My phone died earlier. Look at the battery icon—I just turned it back on. I wasn’t ignoring you.

[year]: Deleted things pretty fast, huh.

Xu Yan lay on his pillow, hugging his phone with both hands. After reading that line, he bit his lip.

Was he saying Xu Yan had just deleted other chats?

He was a little annoyed and buried his face into the pillow, rubbing it hard.

Why was this guy’s mouth so poisonous? Just a few words, and Xu Yan didn’t even know how to respond. So what if he replied late? That guy went the whole afternoon without replying and Xu Yan hadn’t even said anything about it!

[year]: I was in meetings all afternoon and evening. Signal was blocked.

Xu Yan’s eyes widened as that message popped up. A chill ran down his back, and he quickly wrapped himself in the blanket.

How… how did he know what I was thinking? And even explained it right away?

Terrifying. Like he could read minds.

    [Yanyan]: It’s okay~ I wasn’t mad.

So… don’t be mad either, okay?

After that message, Xu Yan kept waiting, but no reply came.

He was hot under the blanket, but the dark silence of the night made it feel like invisible eyes were watching him—glowing green in the dark, silently staring, ready to pounce on his exposed limbs and devour him whole.

Terrified, Xu Yan tucked his head and feet under the blanket, curling into a ball. His little blanket felt like a safehouse where monsters couldn’t reach him.

Still no reply… Were they really going to fall out just after becoming friends?

《The Simp’s Code》said you had to always maintain a friendly, submissive attitude. He timidly typed a message under the covers.

    [Yanyan]: Kitty peeking sticker.jpg

    [Yanyan]: Are you still mad?

    The reply came quickly.

    [year]: No. Driving.

Xu Yan relaxed a little and stretched out, his fuzzy little head poking out from the blanket.

[Yanyan]: Okay~ Drive safe, don’t look at your phone!

After the gentle reminder, year didn’t reply again.

Xu Yan switched to his main account. After some hesitation, he opened his chat with Li Huaiche.

[Xu Yan]: Senior, are you still awake?

[Li Huaiche]: Yup, playing games. What’s up?

[Xu Yan]: I need a favor. You have Senior Wen’s WeChat, right?

[Li Huaiche]: I do. Want it?

[Xu Yan]: No, no. Could you send me a screenshot of his profile? I just want to see something.

Xu Yan didn’t think his request was strange at all, and quietly waited. Sure enough, Li Huaiche sent over a screenshot.

[Li Huaiche]: I can just forward you his contact. You can try adding him, but he probably won’t accept.

Xu Yan glanced at the tiny profile picture and immediately felt reassured—his heart returned to his chest. The profile pic and nickname were totally different. No way something that coincidental would happen.

Still, to be safe, he asked again.

[Xu Yan]: Does Senior Wen only have one WeChat?

[Li Huaiche]: Probably. That’s the one he uses in all the group chats. Most people don’t bother making multiple WeChat accounts.

[Xu Yan]: Got it, thanks~ ^_^

Now Xu Yan could finally relax. Shang Jia was right—he really was just a scaredy-cat who overthinks things. He’d often worry about problems that hadn’t happened yet, or assume the worst about a situation.

He had to work on fixing that.

He opened the app backend and checked his wallet. The balance had finally passed the withdrawal threshold. Xu Yan tapped the withdraw button.

A small message appeared on-screen: “Please confirm withdrawal to WeChat account. No handling fee will be charged for this transaction.”

After all, the money wouldn’t disappear just sitting in the app. He had only recently transferred some to cover his grandma’s medical expenses, and he still had over 300 yuan left. That should be enough to last a while.

Xu Yan didn’t want to develop a bad habit of relaxing the moment he had money, so he clicked Cancel on the withdrawal. He also set an alarm for the next morning, planning to go to the library to continue editing his video.

There were still a few shots missing for the promotional clip—he’d have to squeeze in some time to shoot them at the boxing gym before moving on to post-production.

Before bed, Xu Yan browsed for dresses again on the shopping app. It had already been several days since his last update—unusual for a new content creator like him.

The webpage was filled with gorgeous little dresses that dazzled Xu Yan’s eyes. But the prices were even more unbearable to look at. Well-designed, high-quality ones cost several hundred, even thousands—far beyond what he could afford.

In the end, he bought a modern-style cheongsam that was just over 100 yuan. He figured he’d only wear it once, and then he could resell it on Xianyu after cleaning it.

He remembered several comments asking him to try on a cheongsam, but he wasn’t sure about his body measurements, so he went with a one-size-fits-all.

He had a small frame and slender shoulders—hopefully, it would fit.

By the time he finished everything, it was almost midnight. Just as he was about to turn off his phone and sleep, the screen lit up again in the dark.

He tapped it open—surprisingly, it was a message from his side account.

[year]: Just got home and showered.

    [year]: Are you asleep?

Xu Yan pressed his lips together and didn’t reply immediately.

Maybe he should just ignore it—pretend he was already asleep. It was late anyway. It was perfectly normal for a college student with an 8 AM class not to be up this late.

He turned off the phone, set it beside his pillow, and cuddled his soft little bunny plush against his cheek, eyes closed.

But moments later, faint light pierced through his eyelids again. Xu Yan squinted and instinctively grabbed his phone—only to widen his delicate eyes in shock like he’d seen a ghost.

[year]: Saw it but didn’t reply. Pretending to sleep?

[year]: Not afraid of making me angry anymore?

Xu Yan stared blankly at the ceiling for a few seconds and hugged the bunny tighter.

How… how did he know he wasn’t asleep? How did he know Xu Yan had seen the message?

His drowsiness vanished instantly. Clutching his bunny plush, Xu Yan stared silently at his phone.

Sure enough, a new message popped up within minutes.

[year]: Are those photos really you? Not AI-generated or stolen?

Xu Yan was now fully awake, a flicker of frustration rising in his chest.

You could say his pictures weren’t that good. You could say it was weird for him to wear dresses. But every single photo was something he’d worked hard to take.

How cruel. This was seriously too much.

He jabbed angrily at the screen, soft fingertips typing rapidly.

    [Yanyan]: Of course they’re real!

[Yanyan]: They’re all me. No fakes, only filters, no Photoshop.

[Yanyan]: How could you say that…

The reply came back nearly instantly.

[year]: Doesn’t really look like a guy.

[Yanyan]: But I really am one!

    [year]: Prove it.

Xu Yan’s fingers froze in place, stunned.

In all his twenty years of life, no one had ever asked him to prove he was a guy. How… how was he supposed to do that?

He racked his brain, then suddenly sat up in bed. He turned on his camera and activated the flash.

Thankfully, he had his bed curtain drawn. The only thing that escaped was a quick flash of light through a gap. His two other roommates were already asleep and didn’t notice.

Xu Yan moved very carefully. After editing and cropping the image meticulously, he finally hit Send.

The photo only showed his flat, slim chest. One slender white hand had tugged the hem of his pajama top down tight, the thin pale-blue fabric clinging to his narrow waist—clear proof that his chest was completely flat.

The shirt was slightly pulled up, though the snowy white skin underneath was coyly cropped out. In the top left corner of the image, a bit of delicate calf was visible—clearly showing he was kneeling, legs parted to either side.

    [Yanyan]: Look~ smug cat sticker

A long time passed without a response. Xu Yan stared at his screen, eyelids starting to droop—and eventually, he fell asleep waiting.

Half an hour later, his phone screen lit up again.

    [year]: I saw it.

    [year]: Very pretty.
