Read And Be Lazy
    Chapter Index

Shang Jia added, “You didn’t sleep together last night, right?”

Xu Yan muttered softly, “Not exactly.”

Shang Jia relaxed. “Good. After we finish selling today, let’s go out and have fun. Come home late, let him worry.”

And sure enough, the middle-aged man came not long after and bought all their remaining goods.

By 10 a.m., the three of them had already packed up and left in high spirits.

Last night, Wen Sinian had indeed driven into town, bought two sets of clean clothes, and found a hotel to shower.

Xu Yan disliked the smell of smoke on him. He really should have endured it and not let the smoke cling to Xu Yan.

After scrubbing himself clean, Wen Sinian smelled his old clothes, they reeked of smoke. He tossed them straight into the trash.

The motel’s cleanliness was questionable, and Wen Sinian didn’t want to be too far from Xu Yan. After his shower, he simply drove back to the small alley near Xu Yan’s house.

If Xu Yan had opened the tracker app that night, he would’ve seen that the red dot was right at the alley’s corner.

Wen Sinian dozed off in his car. At dawn, he saw Xu Yan ride off on his scooter again.

He drove back into town and bought a lot of things, so many that the trunk was full and even the passenger seat was piled high.

The car parked right at the front door, but Wen Sinian didn’t get out.

He toyed with his lighter in his palm, clearly hesitating.

The old lady inside the house seemed to have waited a while. Seeing no one come in, she lost patience and came out with her cane.

She knocked on the car window. Wen Sinian immediately got out.

“You’re already at the door, why aren’t you coming in?” Grandma asked. “Do you expect me to personally welcome you, you little rascal?”

Wen Sinian bowed his head. “I’m sorry. I was afraid I’d disturb you.”

Grandma frowned. “You’ve already disturbed me! Now come in quickly.”

Wen Sinian followed behind her, carrying bags from the car.

After placing the gifts in the living room, he returned to the car and brought in everything else, filling the table and even stacking boxes on the floor. There were about ten or twenty boxes in total. At the end, he pulled out a wheelchair from the car and quickly assembled it inside the house.

Grandma had gone to the kitchen to boil noodles for him. When she came back, she found the house nearly buried in supplies.

“Oh my! Who told you to buy all this? Take it back! Take it back!”

Wen Sinian pushed the wheelchair over and had her sit down to try it. “I came too suddenly. I should’ve prepared everything while still in the city. Most of these are supplements, good for your health. The wheelchair’s for when you go out, it’ll help your legs not get sore from walking too much.”

Sitting in the wheelchair, Grandma smacked his hand. “Sinian, listen to me, take this all back and get a refund. This must’ve cost a fortune. I don’t need all these things. If you do this again, next time I won’t even let you in.”

“You accept them, and then I’ll dare to step inside again,” Wen Sinian bent down, looking the old lady in the eyes with complete sincerity. “Actually, I made Yanyan angry. I was hoping you could put in a few good words for me in front of him. Please let me do this to show some filial piety, is that okay?”

The old lady was about to refuse again, but Wen Sinian softly called, “Grandma.”

Grandma sighed and said, “Eat first, the noodles will get cold.”

Wen Sinian quietly sat at the table to eat. Grandma sat beside him, watching, and asked, “Does Yanyan know you came?”

    “He doesn’t.”

“Then why’d you come while he was out?”

    “I promised I wouldn’t disturb him.”

Since it was between the young people, Grandma didn’t ask any more questions.

After eating, Wen Sinian brought the dishes into the kitchen to wash. When he came out, he saw the old lady sitting in the courtyard basking in the sun while weaving a colorful string.

Not wanting to disturb her, Wen Sinian rolled up his shirt sleeves and quietly began tidying the small courtyard.

After hammering back in some loose wooden planks, he noticed a small bamboo enclosure that looked like a chicken and duck pen, but there were no chickens or ducks.

He picked up his car keys and went out. After a while, he returned with two cages. Inside were six yellow chicks and ducklings, which he gently placed into the pen.

He remembered Xu Yan had once mentioned raising chicks and ducklings here as a child.

In addition, he took out a snow-white fluffball from another cage. It was a miniature lop-eared rabbit, soft all over with long white ears drooping down both sides of its head. Its chubby little limbs were tucked into its fur as it lay in Wen Sinian’s large palm, holding a tiny baby bottle in its paws, sipping milk with its rosy little mouth.

At first glance, Wen Sinian just knew Xu Yan would love it, so he bought it home, carefully placing it in a warm incubator box by the living room door. When he saw the baby bottle was empty, he made more milk and gently fed it, then covered the bunny with a cloth.

Grandma silently watched everything from behind her reading glasses, lips pursed in a hidden smile.

With someone so good at coaxing, who needed an old lady like her to speak up?

    Xu Yan didn’t return until 10 p.m.

He had already called Grandma earlier to say he might stay late at Shen Nanli’s place. But Wen Sinian didn’t know that. He sat anxiously in the living room, checking the time every few minutes, glancing at Grandma, wanting to say something but stopping each time.

Grandma had long been sleepy. She should’ve gone to bed by now, but she was so curious to see how her grandson would react that she forced herself to stay up, watching TV with Wen Sinian and even telling him not to leave yet, to stay with her a bit longer.

At 10:30 p.m., Xu Yan finally came home.

He saw Wen Sinian’s car parked outside and tiptoed to the living room, poking his head in, only to be caught by both Grandma and Wen Sinian looking his way.

The first thing Xu Yan noticed was the incubator box by the door. He squatted down to take a look and widened his eyes in surprise, cupping his mouth with both hands to avoid waking the sleeping baby rabbit.

Looking at Grandma, then Wen Sinian, he asked softly, “Where did this bunny come from?”

Grandma teased, “You only saw the rabbit?”

What about the full-grown man standing next to it?

Wen Sinian had already walked to the door, opened the incubator, and carefully cupped the fluffy creature in his hands, lifting it so Xu Yan could see better.

His voice was gentle, soft: “I saw it at a pet shop outside. It’s very small and needs to be fed milk every day, raising it might be a bit troublesome.”

Xu Yan couldn’t help but reach out and lightly touch it, afraid of hurting it. His fingertips barely brushed the soft fur. “It still drinks milk?”

“Yeah, formula works. I’ll teach you how to make it.”

Xu Yan nodded, fully distracted by the bunny. He couldn’t help stroking its velvety ears and poking its round little bottom.

It looked exactly like the long-eared plush rabbit he had, so cute. He really wanted to cuddle it to sleep.

“Do you like it?” Wen Sinian asked.

Xu Yan pretended to think. “Mhm.”

    Wen Sinian smiled. “That’s good.”

Suddenly, the little bunny wriggled in his palm, its chubby head burrowing into Wen Sinian’s fingers. Xu Yan quickly pulled him down to crouch together.

“Put it back now, don’t wake it. I’ll play with it tomorrow.”

    “Okay.”

Wen Sinian returned the bunny to its nest and covered the incubator.

Grandma watched the two from afar and said, “I’m sleepy. I’m going to bed.”

Wen Sinian replied, “Then I won’t bother you anymore.”

He turned to leave, but someone lightly tugged the hem of his shirt.

Turning around, he saw Xu Yan looking up at him. “You haven’t taught me how to make the milk.”

They went into the kitchen. Wen Sinian opened the rabbit formula and scooped out a level spoonful. “Don’t overfill it. Pour a little cold water into the cup first, then gradually add hot water. Finally, add the powder and shake well. To test the temperature, drop a bit on your wrist, if it feels just right, it’s good.”

After explaining, he handed Xu Yan the spoon and small bottle. “Try making it once.”

Xu Yan followed step by step. But when adding hot water, he accidentally poured too much. As he shook the bottle, he realized it felt too hot, it would definitely burn.

He squeezed two drops onto his wrist, and as expected, it stung. He winced. “It’s a little hot…”

Wen Sinian saw the tender skin on his wrist reddening. Heart aching, he quickly pulled his wrist over and like muscle memory, lowered his head to lick the two drops away. Then, he softly blew on the spot.

Lifting his eyes, he asked, “Still hurts?”

Xu Yan didn’t even realize when he got so close. His pale, slender wrist was still held in Wen Sinian’s hand.

That warm, wet sensation just now, it was his tongue.

Realizing this, Xu Yan’s cheeks flushed pink. His lips parted slightly, eyes wide and dark as he looked at him.

Who… who told him to lick it!?

Even though they were still in the middle of a fight, his body reacted faster than his brain could think.

Just seeing Xu Yan get even slightly hurt or wronged made Wen Sinian regret not pouring the water himself, or at least offering his own wrist for the test.

They were so close now. He could smell that familiar, tempting scent from Xu Yan.

His soft, rosy lips looked moist, sweet, so very tempting.

Wen Sinian’s voice turned husky. He murmured, “Baby…”

    Xu Yan instinctively swallowed. “…Hmm?”

Wen Sinian leaned closer, breath almost touching his, his voice low and filled with unspoken yearning:

“Can we make up now? Can I kiss you?”
