Read And Be Lazy
    Chapter Index

    Ao Ke Pavilion.

On the first floor’s private screening hall, the massive venue was surrounded by curved seating encircling the central screen, filled with guests attending the event.

They were dressed in tailored suits and styled with refined elegance. If not for the face masks that concealed half their faces, the whole thing would look just like a high-end business seminar.

In contrast, a few high school boys sitting near the back clearly looked out of place.

Zhao Yuanhao couldn’t hold it in any longer. He leaned over and whispered, “Lu Qiao…”

“Where the hell did you find this kind of party?”

Lu Qiao scratched his cheek, nervously eyeing the room full of mature adults. “I, uh… saw it in my sister’s email inbox.”

    Jiang Tian: “?”

Zhao Yuanhao and his ambiguous friend: “???”

    Lu Qiao’s sister was a top-tier actress.

If this invite came from her email, then this party was definitely not meant for regular high school students!

No wonder everyone here seemed to be upper-class elites!

But to be fair, these days even niche influencer bars were running visual-matching events.

For a same-sex mixer this upscale to still let them in so easily— the hosts were surprisingly inclusive. The barrier to entry wasn’t just low, it was basically nonexistent.

Lu Qiao: “Maybe rich people want to flirt with younger guys!”

    He said it too loudly.

The previously silent room turned to stare at them—all wearing masks.
With those anonymous eyes locked on them, the atmosphere turned very eerie.

    “…………”

The group winced in embarrassment—especially Lu Qiao.

He clasped his hands together in a silent prayer, mouthing: “Pardon my French.”

    “Hon-tony… pardon my French!”

Young, full of life, and clearly new to all this— they immediately became the most noticeable guests in the room.

After the film ended, the host came onstage to explain the party’s rules.

Each person would be randomly matched with a partner to spend the night with.

No one could leave the pavilion until sunrise.

At that point, Jiang Tian and his friends—each wearing their puppy masks—stood out under the attention of nearly the entire room.

    And understandably so.

This bark squad, even with half their faces hidden, had impressive looks and tall, athletic builds.
They radiated youthful energy, making them top-tier 1-types in this entire crowd.

The moment the host declared the start of the match-up session, a flood of guests rushed toward Jiang Tian’s group, blocking all paths with eager invitations to pair up.

Zhao Yuanhao and his “maybe-boyfriend” reacted the fastest—matching with each other and escaping upstairs to enjoy their couple bubble.

Lu Qiao was still doing online dating and declared himself a “pure top with a boyfriend,”so he could only buddy up with a fellow top. But every time he opened his mouth— his voice was like a squeaky snack-loving gremlin from a mobile game.

Enough to instantly repel every classy 0-type in the room.

    And so—

The most popular prize, Jiang Tian, who’d done absolutely nothing, became everyone’s #1 target.

Just rejecting matches kept him busy and dizzy with exhaustion.

    Meanwhile, far across the room—

Chu Xuyu sat in the far corner, wearing his wolf-ear mask.

His cold and sharp face was mostly hidden. Sitting beside him was the heir to the Shen family conglomerate—wearing a lion mask. The two were casually chatting.

No one dared approach this side of the room.

Everyone instinctively understood that these two elite alphas were way out of reach.

The Shen Group successor, Shen Yan, was easy to recognize. He was a notorious straight-shooter and, rumor had it, currently dating a famous actress.

Why he was at a gay mixer tonight? No one could say.

    As for the other one—

Chu Xuyu, the secretive trillion-yuan CEO with a cold reputation and zero gossip— he was even more of an enigma.

He had never shown interest in women…

nor had anyone heard of him being into men.

So his attendance tonight was beyond baffling.

The only logical explanation was that both men were here as a favor to their friend—
the host’s overenthusiastic son, Fu Boxi, who loved throwing these kinds of events.

So really—who’d dare hit on them?

Even half-masked, their status was no secret.

Just standing there was the social equivalent of being naked online.

    That was just as well—

no one disturbed them, and they were free to pass the time however they liked.

    “Speaking of which…”

Shen Yan propped his face on one hand and glanced toward the most chaotic area.
He teased, “Chu-Ge, wanna go find a match too?”

Chu Xuyu leaned against the seat, arms crossed, voice flat: “Are you kidding me?”

Shen Yan smiled, eyes crinkling: “Just worried you’d get bored.”

    Chu Xuyu: “?”

Shen Yan: “Anyway, I should probably get going.”

    Chu Xuyu: “……”

    ‘You’re already leaving?’

Of course, Chu Xuyu knew why.

That actress Shen Yan was dating probably just landed back in Ningcheng.

The big-shot CEO was running off to play personal chauffeur and pick up his superstar girlfriend.

He could only silently wish them lifelong happiness.

Still, that girl was a top celebrity—hopefully they wouldn’t get caught by paparazzi, or it’d be messy.

Shen Yan, adjusting his watch, chuckled: “No need to worry about that, Chu-Ge.”

Chu Xuyu raised a brow, saying nothing—then his thoughts drifted back.

The three of them had once joked about their futures in their teenage years.

It was always obvious that Chu Xuyu would inherit the family business.

Fu Boxi was too unpredictable to predict.

But Shen Yan… once dreamed of becoming an actor.

    The guy had real talent.

Back in high school in L.A., he’d joined the theater club.

Every time he performed, he could move the audience to tears.

Chu Xuyu hadn’t believed it at first.

He thought it was Shen’s rich grandpa paying off the audience.

But one day, he attended a performance—and was completely convinced.

Unfortunately, Shen Yan gave up acting entirely.

Because he fell for a rising young actress.

He saw her early struggles, the hate comments, and his heart ached for her.

So he chose to quietly inherit the family empire—so he could protect her from behind the scenes.

Thanks to his efforts, her career soared.

They confirmed their relationship and had been dating ever since.

    “……”

    After Shen Yan left—

Chu Xuyu sat there, legs stretched, wondering how anyone could stay lovestruck for years without tiring of it.

He didn’t understand it at all.

    He stood up.

The party had mostly thinned out.

Maybe it was time to head home and get some sleep.

    Buzz—

His phone buzzed with a message.

    SHEN: There’s a cute guy.

SHEN: Just saw him getting swarmed for his contact info.

    SHEN: Might be your type.

    AfternoonTea: ?

    SHEN: He went upstairs.

SHEN: You might wanna go “accidentally” bump into him.

    AfternoonTea: ……

Was this some kind of international joke?

Chu Xuyu scoffed and locked his phone, ready to leave the building.

    Except—

his car keys were still on the rooftop terrace table, left there earlier while bickering with Fu Boxi.

Guess he had to head upstairs after all.

Chu Xuyu, somewhat bothered by the hassle, left the exhibition hall with one hand in his pocket. His tall, slender figure exuded an unapproachable and powerful presence.

As he ascended the spiral staircase, he ran into several wealthy young guests attending the party. Some of them had barely known each other for a few minutes before they were already kissing and groping by the stairs.

    “Tch.”

Chu Xuyu frowned slightly, utterly baffled by such animalistic, heat-like behavior.

He held his phone in one hand, eyes lowered as he slowly walked up. He had told Fu Boxi he would just grab his car keys and leave right after.

    Bang—

    He accidentally bumped into someone.

In that instant, Chu Xuyu felt deeply repulsed, unsure whether the person he ran into had also been engaged in some disgusting, heat-driven make-out session.

He instinctively stepped back, lifting his gaze with an expression that was cold and commanding without anger.

    But—

The boy he bumped into spoke first, his voice arriving even before his movement—clear and magnetic. “Sorry.”

    “…?”

Chu Xuyu was briefly stunned. Prejudging from the sound of that voice, he assumed a guy with such a pleasant tone must have an exceptionally handsome face.

    And sure enough—

When their eyes met, he froze on the spot. That pair of amber-like eyes instantly seized his full attention.

Following the trail downward from the floppy dog-ear mask: a well-defined nose bridge, nicely shaped thin lips… under the dim lighting, his face was outlined to near-perfection.

    Chu Xuyu inhaled sharply.

He had never considered himself gay. He hadn’t even defined himself as straight. All he’d ever accepted was his general dislike for people.

But in that moment, standing before this boy, every feature was tailored to his aesthetic. For once, he thought—this person might be an exception.

—Someone he not only admired, but might be willing to try liking.

Maybe because Chu Xuyu hadn’t spoken or moved, Jiang Tian stood awkwardly at the edge of the staircase, aware of his imposition. He shifted even further to the side.

    “Sorry, sir.”

Jiang Tian clutched his phone tightly, feeling a little embarrassed that he’d blocked the path because he was glued to his screen. “I was looking at my phone and didn’t realize someone was behind me.”

    “Are you… alright?”

From Jiang Tian’s angle, the man wore a grey wolf-eared mask, revealing only the lower half of his face—handsome, yet expressionless. His cold gaze remained fixed on Jiang Tian, making him inexplicably uneasy.

    Maybe—

This guest had some kind of special identity or was difficult to deal with. His temper didn’t seem great—he might even blame him for the incident.

Jiang Tian felt a bit panicked inside, though he managed to keep his expression calm. As Chu Xuyu regained his composure, he glanced at that clean, handsome face and subtly licked his lips, quietly admiring just how good-looking the other was.

“No problem,” Chu Xuyu said in a low voice. “I should’ve watched where I was going.”

    Hearing that—

Jiang Tian visibly relaxed and offered a slight smile. “That’s good.”

He had already moved aside, assuming the man would continue upward. But to his surprise, the man’s gaze never left him.

Unlike the other guests who had tried to invite him to pair up, this man didn’t have the same predatory, hungry look in his eyes.

Jiang Tian couldn’t help but wonder if there was something on his face.

He instinctively raised his hand to rub his cheek. The man watching him from above had deep, unreadable eyes that became even harder to decipher.

With a face like that, it was hard to suspect him of anything sinister. He looked entirely respectable—even trustworthy.

But the man still didn’t leave.

Jiang Tian swallowed, his intention to yield space already made clear. He couldn’t help but ask, “Is there something else?”

    “Mm.”

Chu Xuyu’s gaze landed on the border collie dog-ears atop Jiang Tian’s head and seemed to put two and two together. He casually said, “Heard a lot of people want to approach you. Are you hiding from them?”

    Jiang Tian, caught red-handed: “…”

    “…Something like that.”

As a top student at No. 3 Ningcheng High, Jiang Tian had given countless public speeches and never once felt nervous. But for some reason, facing this man, he felt just a little anxious.

So much so that he responded without thinking—admitting he was dodging attention, like he was quietly bragging about being popular.

Chu Xuyu raised his brows slightly. Instead of finding him annoying, he found the younger one’s honesty quite endearing. He guessed the kid was a college freshman—full of youth and energy, quite different from his own nearly-thirty workaholic self.

“You’re pretty popular then,” Chu Xuyu said with faint amusement.

“That’s not what I meant…” Jiang Tian laughed awkwardly. “Are you going upstairs?”

He really wanted to end this conversation, though his subtle hints weren’t lost on the mature man before him, whose dark eyes swirled with unreadable intent.

Just as Jiang Tian struggled to read him—

The man in the suit looked down at his watch, swept his jet-black fringe back, and sighed. “I was actually planning to leave early.”

“But the organizers disagreed. They sent someone to say I have to complete the matching process.”

“…Yeah,” Jiang Tian echoed his frustration. “I actually want to leave too.”

Chu Xuyu followed up, “Were you talking to your guardian just now?”

He had noticed the phone in Jiang Tian’s hand, screen still glowing, like he’d been messaging someone.

Jiang Tian: “Yeah, I was telling my mom.”

    Chu Xuyu: “…”

    So obedient.

He had never imagined he might be attracted to someone like this—so clean-cut and energetic, brimming with strength, yet genuinely… a well-behaved kid.

The domineering CEO suddenly felt a little parched.

    “How about this?”

He claimed he had connections, that they wouldn’t need to spend the whole night together—maybe just two hours would suffice.

“Would you be willing to pair up with me?”

“I might be able to get you out of here early.”
