Chapter 20

 

After a long walk, Shen Qianqian finally saw the welfare home with the lights on. He only had to walk through the backyard graveyard again to get through the holes in the fence.

 

He was afraid of being discovered by the management, so he didn’t dare yell and be bold anymore. He only clutched the plastic rope and silently quickened his pace.

 

The lights of the welfare house shone on the graves, and they looked different from the daytime. So he always felt that each one would explode and out of it came a child ghost with an iron rod.

Shen Qianqian walked through the cemetery with his two legs trembling. When he finally got to the place and crouched down to break the loose iron bar, his arms trembled.

 

Shen Qianqian went into the welfare home. He didn’t know what time it was, but the lights in the cafeteria had been turned on and the windows were shaking- everything made him feel safe.

 

He hurried into the dormitory building and as soon as he arrived at the door of his dormitory, he heard the voice of management behind him.

Shen Qianqian was frightened and suddenly did not dare to move. His eyes only looked at the door panel in front of him.

Shen Qianqian went inside his room. He frequently raised his head to observe the face of the management. A child woke up after hearing a voice and saw Shen Qianqian turned up: “Shen Qianqian, are you back?” 

 

The other children also woke up when they heard Shen Qianqian’s name, looked at him, and then looked at the two managers behind him.

 

“Coming back? Do you know when he came out of the dormitory? Did he go out at night?” Manager Chen asked.

“Did he sleepwalk?” Another manager asked: “It’s just that he fell asleep in the middle of the night, and he got up and walked around as if he was awake.” 

 

The children continued to shake their heads and nod.

 

Another manager said: “They are too heavy, they fall asleep very deeply, even if they are sleepwalking, they will not know.”

 

Manager Chen looked at Shen Qianqian suspiciously, but he would never have thought that such a child would leave the welfare home and spend the night alone outside.
